It all began in 2006. Back then, Prague's two biggest arthouse cinemas, Aero and Světozor, decided on The Child, a film by the Belgian duo the Dardenne brothers which became the first title distributed by the newly established company Aerofilms.
In selecting this film, we took the same approach that we still use today in that we primarily put our faith in our many years of experience running arthouse cinemas, constantly building relationships with our beloved audience, a detailed knowledge of the local milieu, and a considerable number of contacts all over the world.
The activities of the Aerofilms distribution company work in tandem with the programming of the Světozor, Aero, and Bio Oko arthouse cinemas in Prague, the Bio Central cinema in Hradec Králové, and Brno's Scala cinema. These activities are also linked to the operation of these outlets.
All the films we bring to cinema screens are movies we ourselves want to watch. That was – and still is – our motto. This has led us in various directions, including Lars von Trier's team and his Nymphomaniac, the animated film Alois Nebel, one of Helena Třeštíková's many documentaries, and the socially beneficial Crooks, which brought about a change in the law.
Using live and recorded events, Aerofilms provides cinema screens with the very best that opera, ballet, theatre, and concert stages have to offer. The company is an exclusive partner in the Czech Republic for projects that include The Met: Live in HD, NT Live, and Royal Opera House Live. It is the only outlet that has arranged live broadcasts of concerts by the Czech Philharmonic and it has also organised a broadcast from the Jara Cimrman Theatre.
